Dropping a hide off to be tanned.

The easiest way to prepare a hide to be tanned is just placing it in a large plastic bag and wrapping it up and placing it in a freezer as quick as possible. DO NOT SALT THE HIDE.

In hot weather its very critical that the hide is frozen fast. Colder weather it is less likely to spoil a hide. Try pull off the hide from the rear legs down to the head of the animal, the less you cut into the hide the better result you will get.

Don’t worry if you leave meat/fat on the hide we prefer you didn’t try clean the hide up you’ll do more damage than good.

About Us

The Tannery Barr is 100% a waste product, yes that’s right, every hide you see was heading for the bin. That’s where Lachies’ idea was born, starting out professional shooting across farms in Victoria, Lachie was surprised to see there was no market for deer hides once they had been processed for their meat and started tanning hides for friends and family. Each individual hide has been handled over 24 times in the tanning process.

Its a labour of love and passion. Every step of the hide is done in the same location with Lachie and his team. The care of the hide is super easy. Shake them out if any dirt and dust fall on them, you can brush them out with a dog hair comb. After a few years of use they can be washed, simply soak hide in a bucket with a delicate washing detergent for a couple hours and rinse, most importantly lay them flat to dry out. Laying them on a deck is a perfect place to do it.

Great Value!

"Awesome work at a fair price. Brought a hide from a fallow deer I’d shot, and got back a beautiful chocolate floor rug. More than pleased. Will definitely be back."
